Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Sumeria - 4,000 BC

The earliest goddess for whom we have written texts. Extensive writings include her stories, songs, and prayers. She governs love, war, sex, beauty, and her stories share how her lovemaking creates the abundance of the land. She is connected to Venus, the morning/ evening star.

One of her main myths is the story of her going through the 7 gates of the underworld, where she leaves behind her royal garb at each gate until she arrives naked in the underworld, where her sister, Ereshkigal, skins her and hangs her on a meat hook. Inanna had slept with her husband, Gugalanna, the Bull of Heaven, so it is somewhat understandable. 

Through interference from the God Enki, she is rescued. He sends two small, sexless beings, created from the dirt of his fingernail, to slip through the gates of hell, and through their expression of compassion to the suffering Ereshkigal, they are able to free Inanna. 

Inanna helps us with our own underworld initiations, building strength and courage to shed our protective identities and meet the darkness. 

She is a fierce and powerful feminine force. Working with her awakens our own repressed power and sexuality. 

She evolves into Ishtar, then Astarte, Aphrodite, and then Venus. 

The painting features layers: Prayer to the Goddess, a ceremonial urn with a date palm (as she is queen of the date palms), her sacred lions, owls, and scorpions.
